The podcast is like a radio program, however, its main difference and advantage is the content on demand that you can listen to whenever you want. Titled 3 por 5, um podcast de verão, it has the proposal of bringing the best tips about Salvador, stories of past summers, interesting information, besides a lot of humor, everything to make you want to enjoy this hot and busy season with us.

The episodes are led by three people who love Salvador: Lise Oliveira, Fitness lifestyle, journalist and presenter at TV Aratu (SBT Bahia); Fernanda Slama, content coordinator for the Visit Salvador da Bahia portal; and Nininha Problemática, a character created by artist Digo Santos, a black drag queen from the periphery who, since 2017, has occupied several spaces with her humor full of empowerment speeches.

The three of them talk about five subjects per episode, making the funniest review about the best season of the year. The podcast’s name alludes to a classic expression of the Soteropolitan summer, “3 x 5: 3 beers for 5 reais”, which means “an unmissable promotion” itself. And let’s agree that this podcast is more than unmissable! In addition to all the chat between the three, the content producer Nininha Problemática has her own attraction called Momento Piriguete in which, in a fun way, she tells the stories of past summers, bringing curiosities and experiences about the city. The cool thing is that these stories are sent by the Visit Salvador da Bahia followers and interpreted by her.

To listen to the podcast is very easy: just enter Spotify, follow the profile of Visit Salvador da Bahia, open the episode post and click on play. With a total duration of 30 minutes, 3 por 5, um podcast de verão, will also be launched on the channels @visitsalvadordabahia on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

To watch and listen to

The first theme is “Summer Project”, where the three will talk about how to enjoy with or without money, songs for the sunny days, summer love and contacts, the best rides and the summer body, a chat about health to deal with this intense summer schedule. The conversation between them is fluid, funny and engaging, each with a different point of view and experience, bringing to the listeners multiple ways of getting to know the city.

In addition to listening through the official Visit Salvador da Bahia channel on Spotify, the conversation between them is filmed, so you can watch the best moments on the project’s channel on Youtube. The recording took place in a wonderful house in Praia do Buracão, in Rio Vermelho, on a classic sunny day of Salvador summer. The official party start date is February 21, ending on Ash Wednesday, the 26th.

Bahia Carnival is the largest popular participation party in the world. In Salvador alone, the event attracts over 1 million tourists. In 2019, Salvador Carnival programming featured more than 200 attractions at the neighborhoods carnival and 700 performances on official circuits.

You can live many different experiences in one party. Go out one day on an Afro Block; the next day, go see the colorful carnival of the historic center; then, go after a trio elétrico – with rope or no rope, that’s up to you – and live a night of pure glamor enjoying the whole structure of a cabin. For you to know everything that happens in the city during this period, we have prepared this list with the main tips.

Where to stay

For outsiders, the ideal is to stay in neighborhoods close to the carnival circuits. The three main circuits are: Dodô (Barra-Ondina), Osmar (Campo Grande-Avenida Sete) and Batatinha (Historic Center). Through them, the trios elétricos, which are one of the main brands of the carnival, feature renowned national and even international artists. We have a list of excellent accommodations in the city at this link.

Where To Stay

Joy for all tastes

<picture> </picture>

Carnaval 2019. Pipoco, com Léo Santana. Salvador Bahia. Foto Jefferson Peixoto. Secom.

Bahia Carnival is known for being a musical power, a grand celebration for many audiences. There are shows spread all over the city on stages, trios elétricos and inside the cabins. There are also decentralized and alternative carnival programs at Palco do Rock, Vila Infantil and the Neighborhoods Carnival, which takes place in Cajazeiras, Periperi, Itapuã, Liberdade, Boca do Rio, Plataforma and Pau da Lima, with free shows.

To enjoy the cabins and many of Salvador’s carnival blocks it’s necessary to pay, and to participate safely and comfortably, you need to buy an abadá – that colorful shirt that ensures you stay inside the block. There are also great attractions performing in the blocks with no rope, perfect for those who don’t want to spend a lot of money. In the Popcorn Carnival – the public who enjoy the carnival for free on the street, outside the cabins and the ropes of the blocks, is called popcorn – each year there are more performers singing on trios elétricos with no rope, attracting a very diverse crowd where everyone is popcorn!

The Afro Blocks

<picture> </picture>

Afoxé Filhos de Gandhy. Campo Grande. Salvador Bahia. Carnaval de 2017. Foto: Fábio Marconi.

The Afro Blocks are the key point of Salvador Carnival. Coming to Salvador and not watching Ilê, the agogôs of Filhos de Gandhy, the irreverence of the Afro Parade and the tradition of Olodum is the same as not having come. It is through them that our carnival tells its story, they are the ones who have invented everything, all this joy. Try to find out more about Timbalada, the Malê Debalê, Didá, Os Negões, Muzenza. It’s chilling. The shirts for Carnival 2020 of many Afro Blocks are now on sale. It’s better to guarantee yours.

A beautiful revelry that tastes like old days

<picture> </picture>

Carnaval 2019. Fuzuê. Salvador Bahia. Foto: Amanda Oliveira .

Who said Salvador Carnival is only about trios elétricos? The fanfares and wind bands, or “chupa-catarro”, again gained a lot of space in the Bahian revelry, especially in pre-Carnival, usually one week before the official date. It is FUZUÊ and Furdunço that, in the days before the official carnival, promote a carnival that tastes like old days. The fun is in Ondina, at the Orlando Tapajós Circuit (Ondina – Barra).

Fuzuê is a revelry with bands and folkloric groups that parade the Bahian recôncavo traditions, with the Mamulengo da Bahia dolls and the “terrible” masks of Caretas do Acupe, men dressed in scary papier-mache masks.

Soon after, comes the Furdunço, with the mood of the early trios elétricos, when the minitrios, trucks and artists parade as close as possible to the revelers. You can also see the classic Armandinho, Dodo and Osmar Fobica. Fuzuê usually happens from 4pm on, while Furdunço starts at 3pm.

Carnival in the Historic Center

<picture> </picture>

Praça Municipal. Centro Histórico. Foto: divulgação

Did you know that in the Historical Center, more precisely in Pelourinho and Santo Antônio Além do Carmo, there is a pulsating and colorful carnival? The blocks and fanfares invade the hills of Pelourinho towards Carmo.

The Batatinha circuit (Pelourinho) is the most alternative circuit of Salvador Carnival. There are no electric trios and revelers enjoy the sound of marchinhas and little blocks. It is also in the Historic Center that happens the “Costumes Parade in the Municipal Square” and where there is the Multicultural Stage, with orchestras and samba, a loooot of samba. Enjoy the streets!

Carnival for Children

<picture> </picture>

Carnaval 2019. Campo Grande. Salvador Bahia. Foto: Peu Fernandes.

The Kids Balls are very cute. The parties takes place in many parts of the city, they are open and free. Many of them have playful, recreational and sportive activities, trampoline, paint workshop and more. There are also blocks like Carla Perez’s, who leads the Algodão Doce Popcorn at Campo Grande – a block for the whole family.

Safety Tips

Always keep your documents in a “documents holder” or a fanny pack, preferably inside your clothes. Save documents, cell phones and money. Avoid entering streets other than the main ones. At the entrance of all circuits, there is a security personal search, there are almost 50 approach posts for manual searches around the city. Some of the forbidden objects in the party circuits are: firearms or similar, sharp metal or glass objects such as bottles and glasses.

We have prepared a list of perfect songs for this experience. It is the street itself, the people, the tourists’ happiness, the blocks (carnival groups), trios elétricos (musical trucks), fanfares and carnival boxes. Diversity of people and of musical rhythms gathering afoxé, axé, Bahian pagode, samba-reggae, samba and others in the same party. No wonder we make the biggest street party on the planet, as we have a lot to show.

Salvador is renewing itself every year and, together with this land’s strong cultural traditions, the city is being continuously named as one of the best destinations to meet in 2019, like in “The New York Times Travel”, “Kiwi” and “National Geographic”. This feeling is also reflected in our carnival, a mixture of popular culture traditional expressions with the news of this city that is a musical boiling.

In order to form a representative link between the traditional and the new, “Visit Salvador da Bahia”, Salvador’s official tourism channel, has chosen one of the daily Bahian symbols to represent the profile dissemination action in Spotify: the coffee street vendor of Salvador streets! The Coffee Carts are a synthesis of the entrepreneurial spirit, driven by the city’s innovation and creativity sense and the “Visit’s Spotify in Salvador streets” will connect tourists and locals showing the city’s strong relationship with music.

“The (coffee) cart already reverberates through the city streets, it catches everyone”, explains the artist Ray Vianna.

This peculiar cart has the simple activity of selling coffee through the streets of Bahia’s capital and is a true artistic expression: the allegorical carts imitate the trio elétrico, another invention that has become the maximum symbol of Salvador Carnival. Just go out to the Center to see the little trios elétricos reinforcing with their playlists the rhythm of this capital internationally recognized by UNESCO as “City of Music”.

<picture> </picture>

Carrinho de café Spotify do Visit nas ruas. The visual identity was created by the artist Ray Vianna, one of the great responsible for the creation, in the 90’s, of the iconic Timbalada Group body paintings. Ray is known to have developed successful album covers for the Timbalada Group, graphic design, scenography, as well as urban art works in the city of Salvador, such as Odoyá (2008), in Largo de Santana in Rio Vermelho.

About the action “Visit’s Spotify in Salvador streets”

The channel has already 15 playlists for you to enjoy Salvador music. And for Carnival, the playlist “Carnaval 2019” has been created with songs that can’t be missing. There is still “Esquente Verão”, “Novo Som de Salvador”, “Pagodão Não é Axé”, “Pôr do Sol”, among others.

With the playlist, all the networks of “Visit Salvador da Bahia” will be shared, especially the Spotify profile. Due to this Coffee Cart proportions, we can even call it “nano trio elétrico” because it has everything to drag curious when strolling through Salvador events and rehearsals playing the playlists and inviting people to the Visit Carnival Block.

“In the City of Music, even a coffee cart becomes a trio elétrico”, says Moses.

Yes, the Coffee Cart will become a Carnival Block of “Visit Salvador da Bahia” and will be called “Expresso 071: O Café Elétrico”, a name chosen by the public through interactions in the Instagram profile. It will be at pre-carnival, in Fuzuê, on Saturday (02/23), at 4:00 pm, strolling through Orlando Tapajós Circuit (Ondina – Barra), from Clube Espanhol to Barra Lighthouse.

A big publicity strategy is being planned for this. The Visit Salvador da Bahia Coffee Cart will appear in many places throughout the city. In each place, a separate party invites people to go to Barra’s seafront to follow the carnival block. The Cart will always be equipped with Salvador Carnival playlist to cheer those who are in those places.

Events where the cart will be

<picture> </picture>

Carrinho de café Spotify do Visit nas ruas. This decade’s summer could only be in the Music City! To get the party started right now, in your house, we have prepared a list with the songs that will rock! We have made a channel in Spotify that has already 15 playlists for you to enjoy Salvador’s music. And for Carnival, the playlist “Carnaval 2019” has been created with songs that can’t be missing. There is still “Esquente Verão”, “Novo Som de Salvador”, “Pagodão Não é Axé”, “Pôr do Sol”, among others.

We have prepared a list with the songs that will rock!

Here are the 10 songs that promise to be the most played ones this year, both from local artists and artists from outside “Soterópolis” but that will be part of the Bahian revelry programming. Turn up the sound and mix it up!

The diva has come back with full steam. After being absent from the 2018 carnival because of her twins birth, Ivete Sangalo has already had “her own carnival” in April 2018, when the Barra’s seafront was full of people to see her pass on the trio elétrico. This song promises strong emotions! Veveta still has other brand new hits such as the one with Claudia Leitte – Lambada (Corpo Molinho) and another with Léo Santana – Mainha Gosta Assim.

The videoclip hasn’t even been released and has already everything to be successful. Bola, Rebola, music by Anitta, MC Zaac, J Balvin & Tropkillaz, had its videoclip done in Salvador, at Comunidade Solar do Unhão. It has already a lot of love involved, right? The muse will have a trio for her again, without ropes and of course the song Terremoto, in partnership with Kevinho will put everyone to dance a lot.

Saulo being Saulo, what a beautiful song! Saulo Fernandes’ trio elétrico is known for having the most “peaceful” crowd in town. This song has that “summer love vibe” that sticks in your head for years. We can already see love stories coming up when he plays it.

Definitely “Pagodão Não é Axé” (Pagodão isn’t Axé)

The Bahia pagoda has spread throughout Brazil. More and more artists are inspired by the beat that began here with groups such as Terra Samba, Companhia do Pagode, Harmonia do Samba, Gera Samba, É O Tchan and Gang do Samba. Later came Oz Bambaz, Psirico, Parangolé, Pagodart and Fantasmão. Now one of the darling singers is Léo Santana, who runs Baile da Santinha (Santinha Ball), one of the country’s most popular Summer Rehearsals. At Carnival 2019 get ready for much pagodão, swing and dance with: Léo Santana; Harmonia do Samba; Parangolé; PSIRICO; La Fúria and many others. And representing the new generation, ÀTTØXXÁ group is shaking the floor with its “pagode of the future”. Stay tuned to what won’t stop playing:

A great meeting

Daniela Mercury is always a hit, and this year, in partnership with Caetano Veloso, it will be even harder not wanting to go after her trio. Daniela has also released the song Pantera Negra Deusa.

Pabllo Vittar will parade for the second year with a ropeless trio at Salvador Carnival. The drag queen will lead the Pabllo Block on Monday at the Barra/Ondina circuit. Now that you’ve listened to the list of Bahian pagode hits we’ve done, look at how many of the musical genres appear in Vittar’s “Problema Seu”. Cool, right? There will be a lot of “Yukê!”.

In a nostalgic mood, Claudia Leitte launches “Saudade” in partnership with Hungria Hip Hop. The music strolls through the 90’s Axé Music and assures: the world lands in Salvador. But the hit “Balancinho” is already in everybody’s mouth. Another one that is very nice is the Eva’s band song “Chama o Brasil para dançar” (Call Brazil to dance). Luiz Caldas in turn uses Momo’s party to remember that “Respeito é Bom e eu Gosto” (Respect Is Good and I Like It).

O post The 10 most played songs in Salvador for the Carnival 2019 apareceu primeiro em Salvador - Bahia - mix it up.

10 reasons to watch “Fevereiros”, a movie about Maria Bethânia

iwwa

Carnival

Fashion

History and Culture

Music

Travels

Mangueira carnival in Maria Bethânia’s honor and a trip between Rio and Bahia.

O post 10 reasons to watch “Fevereiros”, a movie about Maria Bethânia apareceu primeiro em Salvador - Bahia - mix it up.

Mangueira carnival in Maria Bethânia’s honor and a trip between Rio and Bahia.

The movie that accompanied Maria Bethânia from Rio de Janeiro, with the victorious Mangueira parade in her honor, to Santo Amaro, her hometown, has just been launched. “Fevereiros” by director Marcio Debellian, had its premiere in Salvador and was exhibited in an open square in Santo Amaro, at Recôncavo Baiano, Maria Bethânia’s and Caetano Veloso’s hometown. The city gained prominence in the movie in scenes that show the family and religious atmosphere, and the parties that had an impact in the singer’s life, besides addressing historical aspects such as the emergence of samba, religious tolerance and racism.

Some people watch a movie because of its subject, others pay more attention to the aesthetics, the soundtrack, the edition. There are those who go for the characters or the actors, for the director and even for the awards that the cinematographic work has won. Get ready to put the documentary movie “Fevereiros” in several or all of these categories. Definitely, Maria Bethânia’s trajectory through the homage paid by Mangueira in the carnival of 2016 will enter your top favorite documentaries list.

1 – The Universe that inspired the plot

<picture> </picture>

Fevereiros. Maria Bethania. Foto: divulgação.

Maria Bethânia, exuberant, in her favorite history’s fragment: living the month of February intensely; the Veloso family atmosphere; the charms of Santo Amaro da Purificação, at Recôncavo Baiano. The delicacy of sharing these experiences makes us feel the “scent of sugar cane” of olden times that stands still, giving us a desire of getting to know Santo Amaro and its Popular Festivals immediately, as well as surrender to the singer’s many carnivals, of samba de roda and samba de enredo.

“Recôncavo Baiano, where Bethânia was born, has the particularity of being the place in Brazil that received the biggest number of enslaved black people brought from Africa. Bahia was able to mix the African, Indian and Portuguese traditions and transform them into original Brazilian music, religion and popular festivals expressions. These aspects are presented in the movie as we approach Santo Amaro and follow Mangueira carnival’s construction”, explains Debellian.

2 – Estação Primeira da Mangueira

<picture> </picture>

Fevereiros. Maria Bethania. Desfile da Mangueira. Foto: divulgação

The country’s most popular samba school opens the doors to its “dreams factory”. The movie shows Mangueira carnival’s construction in 2016 – from the first allegories drawings to the parades on the avenue. The day to day in the shed, the rehearsals, other years parades, touching testimonials. The heart beats fast all the time and for those who love carnival, the wish is that it never ends. For viewers who went to rehearsals or to that year parade, there will be moments of trying to find themselves on the screen just to feel that carnival magic again.

3 – Tolerance and religious syncretism

<picture> </picture>

Fevereiros. Caetano Veloso. Foto: Divulgação.

There’s an unique connection of the Veloso family with the Catholic religion and Candomblé. The duality of fear and joy, the singer’s curiosity in childhood and understanding of her faith road. The stories about Mothers of Saint, Mãe Menininha and Edith do Prato. Maria Bethânia moves around both religions with delicacy and mastery, without prejudices, without barriers, but with affection and a lot of dedication.

“What interested me since the beginning, regardless of the result that the Carnival (of 2016) would have, was the segment that Mangueira chose for the plot. Among the many homage possibilities to Maria Bethânia, the school chose to deal with her religious devotion, her personal syncretism that joins Candomblé, Catholic devotion and wisdom inherited from the indigenous”, recalls director Marcio Debellian.

4 – Samba Emergence

In this movie, samba lovers will want to write down the interviewees’ and the characters’ names to learn more about the subject. The movie touches on subjects that intertwine, such as religious tolerance and the samba emergence, starting from Estação Primeira de Mangueira’s history that has been born in a Candomblé house. Luis Antonio Simas, a historian, tells us about the “Ala das Baianas” importance in Rio Samba School parades, and about the “Bond of Sociability” – the idea that without the community it’s not possible to survive. The movie also talks about João Machado Guedes, known as João da Baiana, popular composer, singer, samba dancer and instrumentalist. João da Baiana is considered the introducer of the tambourine in samba.

5 – Celebrations that had an impact in Bethânia’s life

<picture> </picture>

Fevereiros. Maria Bethania. Festa de N.Sra. da Purificação. Foto: divulgação.

The movie could only have this name. The month of February has an importance in Maria Bethânia’s life as the air that she breathes. It’s beautiful to see her commotion when she participates in the Feast of Our Lady of Purification. Every February 2, the Purification feast or the Candeias (Light) feast is celebrated. It is the day of the candles blessing (candeias) and in many churches of Santo Amaro, before the celebration of Holy Mass, solemn processions that walk through the city are organized.

Another celebration shown in the movie is Bembé do Mercado Feast on May 13. This one celebrates the slavery abolition date, the day for “Cheering Isabel”. Bembé do Mercado, which had its first edition in 1889, is considered the largest street Candomblé in the world, gathering more than 40 terreiros from Recôncavo territory to celebrate in Mercado do Santo Amaro shed.

6 – Awards

For those who love to watch an award-winning movie, Fevereiros has been in 29 film festivals around the world, including Canada, France, Russia, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Chile, Uruguay, Congo and Senegal. The documentary received the award for Best Movie in the 10th IN-Edit Brasil and the jury’s Honorable Mention in the Ibero-American competition of the 36th Uruguay International Festival.

7 – Wisdoms and lots of love

According to the director, the movie valorizes humans, reconnects and affirms a strong Brazil. A joyful country that combines faith with feast, that is tolerant, that has in its miscegenation its greater originality.

“… they’re trying to get Brazil to turn its back on itself, putting it all in an inferior place. (…) This here exists. The movie is an affirmation. It has wisdom and much love”, says Debellian.

8 – Testimonials and Participations

<picture> </picture>

Fevereiros. The movie features testimonies of Maria Bethânia, of Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, of Mangueira’s carnival man, Leandro Vieira, the historian Luiz Antonio Simas, the poet Mabel Velloso, Bethânia’s sister, and Mangueira’s flag bearer, Squel Jorgea. Participations of: Pai Pote, Squel Jorgea, Pai Gilson, Julia Basbaum and Nina Basbaum.

9 – Exciting soundtrack

The soundtrack is practically another character, it’s a text. Songs that tell much of the story. It has treasures like Yaô, by Pixinguinha; Clementina de Jesus e João da Baiana; Não me deixaste ir ao samba, by Carlos Cachaça; 13 de Maio, by Caetano Veloso; É D’Oxum, by Geronimo Santana; Atrás da Verde e Rosa só não vai quem já morreu, by Jamelão; and, of course, the 2016 samba of Mangueira, Maria Bethânia, A Menina dos Olhos de Oyá, by Ciganerey and Maria Bethânia.

10 – Dug Images

The movie shows old images of the Veloso family, Santo Amaro, Maria Bethânia, still young, participating in the parties, along with Dona Canô, Caetano and Mabel Velloso. There are also parts of conversations, when Chico Buarque and Bethânia were still very young, where she tells Chico about one of the many myths of Candomblé.

We’ve prepared a perfect playlist for this experience. This is the most expected season of the year. There’s no lack of parties, shows and rehearsals. The cultural agenda of the city is so busy that there is not a day in the week without a programming, after all, Carnival is very close.

For those who don’t live in Salvador but want to know what’s going on here, this article tells a bit about the most traditional Summer Rehearsals in the city and also includes the season news. The rehearsals are previews of what we can expect for the official party days, so it’s worth to make a plan because every year the city catches on fire with the summer arrival. Come and mix it up.

Baile da Santinha
(Salvador Santinha Summer Ball)

“Baile da Santinha Verão Salvador” takes place at Wet’n Wild, under command of singer Léo Santana, one of Bahian Pagode’s icon, as well as shows by invited artists such as the Henrique & Juliano duo, singer Xand Avião, Saia Rodada band and Dj KVSH. Until the end of the season, the event will receive top music stars, such as Zé Neto & Cristiano, Safadão, Marília Mendonça, Ferrugem, Alok, Maiara and Maraísa, Gabriel Diniz, Mariana Fagundes and more!

In the repertoire, great hits of Léo Santana’s career, including the current working music, “Crush Blogueirinha”, one of the most played hits in the country and strong competitor to the Music of Carnival 2019. Baile da Santinha presentations happen on Fridays until February. Besides the many attractions, this is a great party, with jugglers, wooden legs and a structure designed for comfort with the Bloco do Nana Cabin, Frontstage Lounge and Harém Stage.

A Melhor Segunda-Feira do Ano
(The Best Monday in the World)

With the #ensaioraiz campaign, Harmonia do Samba decided to recover summer rehearsals essence, performing a more compact event, preserving the relationship with the public. The song “Respeite” is part of the album “Atualize-se”, recently released on digital platforms, and represents the synthesis of the feeling that involves the project.

Songs like “Tic Nervoso”, “Daquele Jeito” and also “Malandrinha” and “Vaqueiro Atualizado”, are part of the repertoire of the show that happens in Wet’n Wild and shakes the public. At each edition, the show also counts on other groups invited to cheer the public. Besides that, everything happens on a 360° stage, which allows the audience to be very close to the band.

Tá Batenu – ÀTTOOXXÁ

Sensation among summer parties, the ATOOXXÁ group is doing a series of shows throughout the season. There are crowded editions full of beautiful people, a crowd that doesn’t stop dancing, dancing hard from the beginning till the end. Called “pagode of the future”, this band’s rhythm will invade your party and your head with songs that mix so many rhythms that it is difficult to stand still. Maybe you’ve already known them with the song “Elas Gostam” in partnership with Psirico, Carnival hit on 2018. The recent work, entitled “Tá Batenu”, has an awesome repertoire with “Caixa Postal” and “É Sim, de Verdade!” and many other hits.

Bailinho de Quinta
(Thursday’s Ball)

Going from one musical universe to the other, Bailinho de Quinta is all about Marchinha de Carnaval (a genre of music typical of Brazilian Carnival, very popular from the 20’s till the 60’s), confetti, streamer and joy! They make parties that take revelers to the streets of one of the most charming districts of Salvador: Santo Antônio Além do Carmo. They also give shows in Pelourinho’s squares and parties around the city. These are dancing shows, with old carnivals successes, and it is common for the audience to use costumes.

Afro Groups – Classics of Classics

Olodum

<picture> </picture>

Olodum Crédito Magali Moraes

One of the most popular musical groups in Salvador, Bloco Afro Olodum needs no introduction; after all, it has been taking the Afro-Bahian musical culture to Brazil and to the world for 40 years. They celebrate the date at this year’s carnival, with the theme: “The Two Stories: The Perfume of Roses”. We can already expect big surprises. The Group does its rehearsals on Tuesdays in Pelourinho, one of the city’s must-see classics.

Cortejo Afro (The Afro Parade)

<picture> </picture>

Cortejo Afro TCA Ensaios 2012. During the show, which has Alberto Pitta’s artistic direction, the band shakes the public by the sound of their compositions, mixed with re-readings of MPB songs, Pop music and percussive beat, promoting innovative aesthetic experiences that bring dance, music and visual arts together in the same spectacle.

Malê Debalê

<picture> </picture>

Malê Debalê

Malê Debalê Group has an extensive calendar throughout the year, especially in the summer. The group also integrates children with the Malezinho Black Boy and Black Girl Contest, all of them in their own headquarters, in Itapuã. Malê rehearsals take place on Thursdays in Pelourinho and happen until February.

Filhos de Jorge Rehearsal

<picture> </picture>

Banda Filhos de Jorge. The group brings in its front line Daniel Vasco, Arthur Ramos and Marta Lan and a repertoire that brings together since those songs that have made history to the newest one recently launched “Saudade de Você”, composition of Arthur Ramos and Neto de Lins.

Encontro de Verão – Denny Denan
(Summer Meeting – Denny Denan)

Denny Denan left Camaçari and went to Candeal, where he stayed in Timbalada for 25 consecutive years. Now he’s on a solo career with his own musical project. In the new solo project, the singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist musician rescues an old desire of his: to present on the world’s stages all the artistic and musical plurality, resulting from a history built on a lot of work, study, research and learning.

Jau + Guests

<picture> </picture>

Jau no Pelô. Verger, who was a French photographer, ethnologist and anthropologist, had traveled the five continents and was passionate about African and African-American culture. He arrived in the Northeast part of Brazil with no intention to stay, just like everywhere he went in the world. Things started to change the day Verger landed here. While Europe was in the post-war era, everything was very peaceful in Salvador. He was soon seduced by the city’s hospitality and cultural richness and, in the end, decided to stay. His friend anthropologist Roger Bastide guided him on exploring Bahia, and Verger had read Jorge Amado’s book “Jubiabá”, which increased his curiosity.

“But I will declare that one of the reasons for my arrival here is in large part the fact that I read Jorge Amado’s Jubiabá before the war. I was delighted with the book. I confess that the reaction I had when I arrived was even stronger.” Excerpt taken from Exu Magazine, Pierre Verger interview for Claudius Portugal.

<picture> </picture>

Foto: Uiler Costa

Nowadays, how many stories of those who fall in love with the city have you heard about? Of people who, like Verger, came here by ship and liked it so much that decided to stay, or came back several times. Almost completely surrounded by the sea, Salvador is a peninsula. From Barra up, Atlantic Ocean. From Barra down, the lush All Saints Bay. This geographic condition allows us to be on the route of national and international cruises.

<picture> </picture>

Temporada de Cruzeiros. For those who want to go straight to Bonfim Church, the route doesn’t take more than 30 minutes, and for Barra it is a little over 6 kilometers away. Samy Furtado, Tour Escort at the MSC Cruzeiros company, says that clients set up their tour groups inside the ships, through tour magazines, those with the descriptions of each excursion, or through the MSC company website.

“About 1,000 passengers know Salvador in this way, looking for the ship’s internal agencies,” says Samy.

At the Terminal, the Kiosk GROU Tourism is the official agency on land and makes sales only on the premises, you can’t buy on internet. Marilda Duarte, a kiosk attendant, explains that the itineraries are pre-designed, and as the groups are set, the agency takes care of everything: “The service has a car waiting with a guide to go with the group, and everyone already leaves with identification (a bracelet), leaving the name and number of the cabin”. In both examples, both the ship’s agency and GROU, the most popular excursions are Farol da Barra, Bonfim Church, Historical Center and Stella Maris beaches.

<picture> </picture>

Temporada de Cruzeiros. These professionals stay at the Terminal exit. But if you are one of those who doesn’t fit into any of these examples, either because you have come to town a few times or because you don’t really enjoy this group tour, we have some tips for you to get to know the city with a “fresh look”. The itineraries are: “One afternoon in Itapuã”, “A sunny day with the family”, “An afternoon in the Lower City”, “Much charm at Carmo”, and “Pierre Verger around the city”. If you are too lazy to do a lot of things, take the Plano Inclinado Gonçalves or the Lacerda Elevator (you can walk to both from the Maritime Terminal) and go to the Carnival House. It’s unmissable!

<picture> </picture>

Temporada de Cruzeiros. The Hotel Ships, for example, are much smaller vessels, where the public is composed almost entirely by foreigners with high purchasing power. In this case, the passenger owns the cabin, he/she doesn’t buy a cruise package. It works like this: the ship navigates around the world and you can at any time choose a port and embark. In big ships, like Fantasia and Poesia for example, the public is predominantly Brazilian, being almost 90% of the passengers. There’s also the School Ship, only of university students, and all the passengers are foreigners.

In December (02), Salvador received the largest cruise ship in Brazil’s history. Recently inaugurated in Italy, MSC Seaview has a capacity of 5,179 passengers, 11 types of cabins, six specialized restaurants, seven different shows and a more than 100 meters zipline. The transatlantic was inspired by the concept of a ‘beach house’, and its structure impresses with its innovative 323-meter-long architecture. The MSC Seaview will dock in the capital of Bahia for ten times this season, the last being on April 2.

<picture> </picture>

Cruzeiro MSC Seaview. Everything changes when these ships arrive. Luiz Augusto Brito, Operations and Port Security Supervisor of the Passenger Terminal, says that in the past it was very common to have party ships, like graduation celebrations, etc. This characteristic has been changing, but the carnival ships, these ones remain alive and kicking. “Even the public changes. Carnival ships, on the other hand, have a longer stay, usually arrive on Saturday and only leave on Tuesday or even Ash Wednesday. And if you think people sleep in hotels around town, you’re wrong. All crew members return every day/night to the ship. Detail: it is written “day/night” because the passengers often return only the next day in the morning. “(At this time) you see people going out dressed as Batman and coming back as Robin, going from Spider-Man to Wonder Woman. A citizen already threw himself on the x-ray machine,” jokes Luiz.

<picture> </picture>

Furdunço 2017 – Foto: arquivo da Prefeitura

He says that during carnival, security is reinforced, the Federal Police stays on standby and everyone is instructed to maintain the organization. But keeping a smile on the face and the tranquility to deal with the revelers are necessary things to carry on with the work, even with people’s excitement. Some structures are installed on the top floor of the Terminal, such as abadás delivery, customization and everything that can help people during their stay. Few visitors buy sightseeing tours, so the focus goes to make sure that people disembark and leave with everything they need to enjoy in safety.

At carnival, the big majority of the people who are in these ships are Brazilians and a young public. Daniele Lima Leão Vieira, the receptive interpreter, says that one year two of the moored ships also placed Djs playing inside, with parties in each of them, so it was carnival also on the high seas. “As the days passed by, the ships honked at each other. Now can you imagine the party that happened in this terminal?”, Daniele recalls.

<picture> </picture>

FUZUÊ , uma folia linda e com gostinho dos velhos tempo! Whatever your nationality is, or what place of Brazil you’re coming from; if you are young or if you already have white hair; whether you’ve come for the culture, music, beaches or parties; if you are a walking all day type or if you’re more contemplative, you’ll definitely find ‘THE’ town for you. It may be the drums sound that emanates from every corner, or the people who live in the city, but the truth is that Salvador is a curious and intense experience. Mix it up!

Important

The Arrival Terminal is not open to the public. People authorized to enter are: passengers who are embarking or disembarking, people who are working on the ship and at the kiosks, or the terminal’s own staff, in addition to the inspection agencies.

When it’s boarding time, there is a division on the ship’s floors, with the check-in boarding upstairs and disembark downstairs. The passenger goes upstairs, checks in, checks the suitcase and embarks. So if you are going to meet someone who lives in Salvador, you will have to leave the terminal and meet the person outside.

<picture> </picture>

Temporada de Cruzeiros. With much care and using technology and interactivity, the Carnival House tells the story of the revelry in a visual and sensorial trip, with several thematic fragments of the party that is in the popular culture essence, social transformations and development of Bahian identity. The House is curated by Gringo Cardia, the same one that also commanded, in Salvador, the implantation project of Casa do Rio Vermelho – Jorge Amado and Zélia Gattai.

<picture> </picture>

Carnival House – books that tell the story of this great party.
