Meet 09 brands from Bahian creators with national and international prominence

Bahia is not just made of natural beauties, music and gastronomy. Yes, we are famous for our regional plurality, cultural richness, ancestry, well-seasoned food and music. But the state is also conquering more and more space in national and international fashion every day. As a plural region that it is, within this sector it could not be different. Therefore, the fashion made by Bahian stylists does not fail on exalting what is most beautiful here, with super creative, stylish, inclusive and, of course, representative clothes.

The expression of identity fashion has taken Bahian names to parade on the catwalks of the world with their original creations. Most even dialogue with African ancestry, as a tool to enhance their artistic creations. To exalt the artists who bear the name of Bahia in their pieces, in this text, we list 09 brands that are popular not only here, but throughout Brazil.

2. Dendezeiro

The Bahian brand Dendezeiro develops tying techniques that adjust the garments to the bodies, allowing the same clothes to be comfortably worn from S to L. In the description, the brand says it was born from this context: “Imagine communicating with someone who cannot understand what you are talking about? That’s how fashion has been, because it can’t communicate with different bodies and different skins.” Therefore, Dendezeiro emerges as a brand that believes in diversity not as a possibility, but as a responsibility.

Why Dendezeiro? Bahia is home to the Costa do Dendê, the largest oil palm reserve, where most of the oil palm known in Brazil comes from. The name is a tribute to the Northeast, which develops and fosters the cultural fashion scene. Like a good creation of the palm oil, the brand carries the “stain that does not come out” everywhere. The clothes have already worn artists such as Majur, Trevo, Vitão and Larissa Luz and have already been present at São Paulo Fashion Week. Recently, it signed a collab with C&A, one of the largest department stores in Brazil.

It has already participated in other projects such as “City Forest” by Converse in Salvador; the launch campaign for Disney + Havaianas de Cruella in São Paulo, together with Célula Preta; and the direction of the film “História de Hiran, Wendell, Linn da Quebrada and Margareth Menezes”.

3. Meninos Rei

Meninos Rei is a brand from Bahia created by the brothers Céu Rocha and Júnior Rocha. Figuring in the fashion world for six years, what started in a small production at the request of friends, gradually expanded and reached notoriety in the fashion market and among consumers. Currently, the brand is significantly consolidated and has already participated in the biggest fashion event in Brazil and the most important in Latin America, São Paulo Fashion Week.

The work reveres ancestry, based on African fabrics, while connecting with the contemporary in modern Afro-urban creations, which use techniques such as patchwork, and exploit daring modeling, which escape the obvious.

Journalist

Walking through the streets of Salvador is to be sure that we will see a wide variety of African braids and hairstyles, of different shapes and forms, adorning the heads of men and women. Many people do not know, but according to information from journalist Juliana Henrik on the Voz das Comunidade portal, the African braid, specifically the nagô, is quite old in Africa and the hairstyles cover different social areas. Religion, kinship, state, age, ethnicity and other identity attributes can be expressed through hairstyles.

According to the publication, “ethnic terms such as Nagôs, Angolas, Jejes and Fulas represented identities created by the slave trade and each term contained a range of enslaved tribes from each region”. But what many people did not know is that the divisions and the recognition of these tribes were made from the design and observation of each hairstyle, which always had a map to help locate its members.’

With the enslavement process of African societies in the early 15th century, hair also played an important role as a conductor of messages, as part of a complex system of languages. According to Juliana Henrik’s publication, the manipulation of hair was a way of resistance and of maintaining its roots. “The braids also served as a backdrop for various movements such the Civil Rights March in the United States and the appearance of black movements like Black Power and Black Panthers, who fought for rights and praised Afro culture.”

That said, we can understand the wide variety of African braid styles, ranging from complex curves and spirals to strictly linear composition. But what we often do not is listen and learn about the history of the owners of the talented hands that decorate the heads of the Soteropolitanos. Now get to know the history of some of them, which are inserted in the Curuzu neighborhood.

And why get to know who goes up Ladeira do Curuzu?

Until 2017, Curuzu was a street in the Liberdade neighborhood. However, as it grew in relation to its autonomy and identity, it was included in the list of neighborhoods in Salvador, through No. 9,278 / 2017 Municipal Law. The choice to present the history of the neighborhood’s trancistas is due to the connection of this place with the Afro-Brazilian culture, which has existed since the beginning of the occupation of the place.

There, there are several candomblé terreiros, among them the traditional Ilê Axé Jitolu and Terreiro Vodun Zo Kwe that, in addition to religious activities, were pioneers in carrying out cultural and socio-educational activities for the community in favor of Afro-Brazilian culture and against the racism.

As of 1974, Curuzu gained another reinforcement: Ilê Aiyê, the oldest Afro group in Salvador’s Carnival, founded by neighborhood residents. Ilê Aiyê is a cultural group that promotes culture of African origin in Brazil.

Currently, the group maintains a cultural association, being considered a heritage of Bahian culture, a landmark in the process of re-Africanization of the Carnival of Bahia. It is also characterized as a black militancy entity, with actions that value culture and combat racism. One of these actions is A Noite da Beleza Negra, the biggest beauty contest and exaltation of black women in Brazil, which takes place since 1975 and elects the Goddess of Ebony (Queen of Ilê).

Family support

Born in the neighborhood of Pero Vaz, Itana Sara Santos had a difficult childhood, as she was raised by women who always worked to support the family. As a teenager, she moved to Curuzu, where she learned to braid hair.

“This happened because my mother was not able to pay a trancista. I learned out of necessity, to do my self-braiding and also earn money from it to help support the family”, she explains.

Currently, at the age of 29, she does all kinds of African hairstyles, nagô braids and applies the techniques of crochet braids in her own salon, Orí de Ouro Hair Studio. The public that served is formed, generally by black women, of low income, who are in hair transition phase.

“My priority is to help these women discover their own identity, exalt their beauty, making them discover the texture and beauty of their own hair, thus making peace with the mirror and with self-esteem”, highlights the transwoman.

Entrepreneurial strength

A resident of Curuzu, Heliene Teles (Afrele Teles) is the daughter of two street mobile vendors and is the youngest among four sisters. In her early teens, as she moved through the streets, she began to observe the similarities between women in the neighborhood.

“Whenever I walked through the street alleys, I saw those beautiful black women parading through the neighborhood with their braided hair and beautiful African hairstyles. I also saw my mother getting ready to go to sell things at parties and my sisters decorating themselves to go to school. As this type of service was expensive at that time, my mother ended up not being able to pay to do the hair of the four of us, and I, being the youngest, was always left out,” she says.

But anyone who thinks she has given up, is wrong. What could be cause for discouragement, in fact, prompted her to move on, and at the age of 13, she began to learn the techniques of African braiding.

“I used my sister as a guinea pig, because, until then, I had only seen one person do the braids, but I had never stopped to do it. I made her nagô braids and realized that I had the gift for it. At first, I spent four days doing my sister’s hair as a short bob. But I got better and today I have a store in the center of Salvador, Linda Arte Hair, a specialist in hair extension, Afro braiding, dreadlocks, Afro hairstyles, among others”, she celebrates.

Own identity

Born and raised in Pero Vaz, Elaine Cristina Silva Lima de Jesus is the daughter of a housewife and a security guard. She is the youngest of the three brothers and considers that she had a simple but very happy childhood. At the age of 17, recognizing the need to seek a position in the job market, she started braiding hair in a professional course at the Ilê Aiyê Cultural Association.

“I already knew how to braid, but I became professional thanks to Ilê Aiyê. Until then, my self-esteem was very low, I didn’t accept myself, I didn’t think I was beautiful, nor did I like the features of my face, that is, I didn’t recognize myself. Only after this course did I start to recognize myself as a black woman and for that I am very grateful to this institution”, she highlights.
After recognizing her own identity, Elaine decided to bring about change in the lives of other women, creating her own salon, specializing in Afro aesthetics.

“The profile of Ori Candaces is to take care of the aesthetics of the ori (head) of the black women of our city, because the greatest difficulty of acceptance is in us, due to so many situations of prejudice that we are exposed to on a daily basis”, explains the trancista.

Elaine works with various techniques, including box braids, African hairstyles, Ghanaian and Nagô braids, as well as interlaces and crochet braids.

“When the girls arrive, they leave knowing that they are being crowned, knowing the meaning of each braid and aware that our braids tell stories of our ancestry”, she points out.

An empowered woman

A dancer since she was 6 years old, Monique Ellen Silva Santos had her childhood marked by the separation of her parents and the dream of uniting them again, this being her main request for the letters she wrote to Santa Claus at Christmas. With the distance from her father, she gave up this idea in her teen years and, in addition to her mother’s love, started to have the main male references in her grandfather and stepfather. She started braiding her hair after giving up on becoming a professional dancer at the age of 15.

“Since I was a little girl, I saw my mother braiding the neighbors’ hair, I saw that they left feeling beautiful, invigorated, with bright eyes, and I was impressed. With that, I started to do hairstyles little by little, at the age of 17, watching and asking my mother for guidance. And today, at 21, I do it professionally”, she explains.

Nicknamed as a Woman of phases, Monique considers herself inspiration for many of her clients, as she always seeks to change her look and feeds her personal page on instagram (@oxe_elenoficiall), showing these changes.

“My clients, in general, want to try new things, they want to change their look. And there are those who are going through a hair transition and go there to look for alternatives so that this can happen without lowering their self-esteem”, explains Monique.

Working with nagô braids, twists, organics, hairstyles, box braids and interlaces, Monique feels fulfilled with the work she does and summarizes it:

“When I finish a hair, I see the twinkle in my clients’ eyes and that is a satisfaction for me. I am invigorated, because I see the smile and the posture of an empowered woman”, she concludes.

With more than a thousand pieces of material African and Afro-Brazilian culture, the Mafro – Afro-Brazilian Museum of the Federal University of Bahia actively contributes to the dissemination and preservation of these cultural matrixes. In addition to the headquarters in Salvador, the museum has a digital collection, which has photos and information of the items displayed at the headquarters, located at Largo Terreiro de Jesus, in Pelourinho, in Salvador.

Among the materials available on the Mafro website, there are the Afro-Brazilian Collection, with elements of religiosity, plastic arts, afro blocks, capoeira and more; and the African Collection, with musical instruments, weaving items, masks, sculptures and ceramics.

It is also possible to stroll through the long-term exhibitions: “Painéis de Carybé”, with 27 monumental carvings by the artist, representing the orixás of Bahia’s candomblé; “Artes do Crer”, with part of the Museum’s Afro-Brazilian Religious Material Culture collection, which values the collection’s memory and its importance as a document of sacred art of African origin and inspiration produced in Bahia; and the exhibition “Máfricas: As Áfricas do Mafro”, which proposes a decolonizing look at Africa, with pieces from the Royal Museum of Tervuren.

Mafro is one of the few in the country to deal exclusively with African cultures and its importance in Brazilian culture. Through material elements, representative of these cultures, the museum presents contents that facilitate the understanding of the historical, artistic and ethnographic aspects that identify African societies and allow a reflection on the importance of this matrix for the development of Brazilian society.

The museum’s headquarters, which was first organized by Pierre Verger, is installed in the building of the first medical school in Brazil, which today is owned by the Federal University of Bahia.

Virtual Tour of Teatro São João da Bahia

You can even talk to Dom Pedro II and Castro Alves

First large Brazilian theater, with a capacity for about 2 thousand people, the Teatro São João, a cultural space that set tongues wagging in Salvador until 1922, can now be visited from home. Thinking of revisiting this place, which was the stage not only for theatrical performances, but also for important historical moments in the city, the History professor and researcher, Maria Antônia Lima Gomes, transformed the Teatro São João da Bahia into a Virtual Museum.

The Teatro São João da Bahia Virtual Museum allows close contact with the ambience of Salvador and its main road center, Freguesia da Sé. The 3D museum simulates environments and historic spaces that represent Salvador’s culture and history. In addition, people can chat with Emperor Pedro II, with poet Castro Alves, with conductor Carlos Gomes and singer Xisto Bahia. It is also possible to see a masquerade ball that took place inside the theater.

Photographic collection of the Pierre Verger Foundation

French photographer, ethnologist and anthropologist Pierre Verger traveled the five continents and was passionate about African and African-American culture. Verger was probably the first to photograph Bahian culture with such sensitivity and quality.

These and other stories and the entire trajectory of Pierre Fatumbi Verger are very well told (and cared for) in his home, which today is the Pierre Verger Foundation. Created legally in 1988, the Foundation works today in the same house where Pierre Verger lived for years, in Ladeira da Vila América, in Salvador.

On the Foundation’s website, it is possible to have access to a vast collection of brilliant images, such as the Portfolios of Orishas, Dieux d’Afrique, Pictures of Bahia, Fluxo e Refluxo, Capoeira, Trips, Sailboats, Architecture and Sleepovers. In addition, you can take a deep dive into the photo library with works from around the globe cataloged in the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania. It will be quite a journey!

From Ivete to Caetano: know their history with the city

Jorge Gauthier

It is not new that Salvador serves as an inspiration for artists from all over Brazil and the world. Whether for the beautiful landscapes, the culture, the music, the diversity, or the well-known joy of the people from Salvador, the fact is that many people don’t leave the city, it doesn’t matter what.

The list of lovers, of course, includes celebrities from other cities in the country and also from Bahia who surrendered to the delights of living in the Land of All Saints. Thinking of the personalities who were not born in the capital of Bahia but live here now, we made a list of 10 artists who chose Salvador to live. Check it out.

1 ● Ivete Sangalo

One of the greatest singers in Brazil, Ivete Sangalo, 47 years old, came from Juazeiro to Salvador at a very young age, at 17 years old, and seems to have fallen in love with the capital. Since 2006, she has lived in a duplex apartment in Edifício Mansão Morada dos Cardeais, with an entrance through the neighborhood of Vitória. Nothing less than at the “doorway” to the Osmar Circuit, in Campo Grande, the most traditional of Salvador’s Carnival. Strategic, right ?!

The apartment is on Avenida Contorno, one of the most beautiful views of Salvador, and has already become a tourist spot. There is no taxi driver, or visitor’s friend, who doesn’t point to the building where the Bahian diva lives and say: “Look! Ivete lives there”. If you are from another city, tell us: you have already had this experience, right?

The list of houses where Ivete lived in the capital of Bahia still includes her sister’s house, Cynthia Sangalo, in Rio Vermelho; an apartment in Federação neighborhood and another in Pituba.

Despite having rented a house in Rio de Janeiro for when she records “The Voice Brasil” and spending time at her beach house, in Praia do Forte, in the municipality of Mata de São João, it is in Salvador that the artist spends most of her time. It is also there that she traditionally performs an intimate show for her fans on May 27, when she celebrates her birthday.

2 ● Caetano Veloso

Born in Santo Amaro, a city in the recôncavo of Bahia, Caetano Veloso, 77, has said a few times that he considers Salvador his first big city. Dona Canô’s son came to the capital of Bahia 60 years ago, when he was only 17 years old. Despite having another apartment in Ipanema, in Rio de Janeiro, it is in his apartment at Morro da Paciência, in Rio Vermelho, that the singer usually spends the summer.

3 ● Mateus Aleluia

The artist Mateus Aleluia, 76 years old, former member of the Bahian trio Os Tincoãs, is one of the most powerful voices of Afro-Brazilian music. Born in Cachoeira, a city in the southern part of Bahia, he spent 20 years living in Angola, Africa, and since 2002 he has been living in Salvador.

He is often seen walking on the streets of Santo Antônio Além do Carmo, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. But it is in the bohemian Rio Vermelho that the artist lives.

4 ● Alinne Rosa

Born in Itabuna, in the south of the state, singer Alinne Rosa, 38, left her homeland towards the capital of Bahia while still in her teens to take a chance on her artistic career. After more than 20 years in the capital, she says she is in love with Salvador.

“I am in love with this city that caught my heart when I arrived here, still in my teens. At first, it was difficult. I didn’t even have the money to pay for a bus ticket, but I walked the streets admiring the beauty of the city, dreaming of better days. It’s good that I didn’t give up on Salvador nor did it give up on me. Today, my whole family lives here and we’re happy”, declared Alinne, in 2016.

Currently, Alinne lives on a penthouse near the Zank hotel, in Rio Vermelho, with her golden retriever dog Bolo de Rolo. It is there that she is isolated in this pandemic.

“Rio Vermelho has everything I like. Nightlife, natural beauty, all kinds of people. It is a lively, pulsating, colorful neighborhood. For me, it is the most special place in Salvador. It translates well Salvador’s way of being” , said the former singer of the band Cheiro de Amor.

5 ● Luiz Caldas

One of the most important names in Brazilian music, singer and composer Luiz Caldas, 57, was born in Feira de Santana. He lived in Vitória da Conquista and later came to Salvador, where he formed the “Acordes Verdes” band. It’s here where he lives today.

“This land is wonderful, has its own identity and has lent that identity to the rest of the country”, said the artist, who has already composed countless songs inspired by the capital of Bahia. One of them is the song “Muito Prazer! Meu Nome é Salvador”, launched in 2017. One of the excerpts from the song says: “Salvador is a mystery. It is immediate passion. It is the simple and the complex. It makes poetry with its verse. It is my love”.

The multi-instrumentalist and Brazilian producer has a studio in his house, in the Caminho das Árvores neighborhood. There, the father of Axé Music maintains a frantic production and releases about ten songs a month.

6 ● Pablo

Agenor Apolinário dos Santos Neto, better known by the stage name Pablo, 34, was born in Candeias, in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador (RMS), and came to the Bahian capital after fame. Today, the “Sofrência King” lives in a mansion in Alphaville.

It is at his home, in the luxury condominium on Avenida Paralela, that the artist is quarantining. He even recorded his last video clip, Notícias da TV, indoors. The singer’s bet for the “quarantine hit” features Pablo acting, from a distance, with a model.

7 ● Adelmario Coelho

One of the main representatives of the authentic “Forró Pé-de-Serra”, the Bahian Adelmario Coelho is originally from Barro Vermelho, in the district of Curaçá, north of Bahia. He has been living in Salvador since he was 17 years old. He moved here in the 1970s, when he served in the army, ran a taxi and was a security technician at the Petrochemical Complex for 20 years.

All of this before he started playing amateurly in bars in the capital of Bahia, mainly in the Uauá bar, located in the Itapuã neighborhood. Today, Adelmario lives in an apartment in Alto do Parque, in the Itaigara neighborhood.

Despite being originally from Barro Vermelho, about 600 km from the capital, Adelmario claims to be “born in Salvador” and speaks fondly of the city where he lives with his wife, Marinalva Coelho, children and grandchildren. “The city welcomed me very well. I spent my whole life here and I really like the people. The public is my best wealth”, said Adelmario.

8 ● Mabel Velloso

Born in Santo Amaro da Purificação (BA), the Bahian writer, composer and educator Mabel Velloso, 86, came to live in Salvador four decades ago. Older sister of Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia, the writer has also become known as a poet – she has had several of her poems turned into music.

Mabel chose the Tororó neighborhood in Nazaré to live. It was there, in fact, where her father, Zeca, rented an apartment for Caetano and Bethânia to study. The choice is due to the fact that the place has inland air, similar to that found in her homeland. It is on Rua José Duarte, on Avenida Joana Angélica, near Hospital Martagão Gesteira, that Mabel resides.

The writer has a special affection for Dique do Tororó: “I also got used to a magic that enters me for living near the waters of the Dique”.

The singer and songwriter moved to Salvador in the late 1960s and has since lived in the capital of Bahia. Paulinho currently lives in Jardim Armação, a neighborhood completely bordered by the beach.

Since 1975, the artist has participated in the carnival of Bahia with the Trio Elétrico Os Novos Baianos. He is also one of the founders of the Bahia Association of Independent Artists (ABAI), an entity that represents singers and composers before public bodies and private companies.

10 ● Wilson Aragão

With the separation of his parents, he went to São Paulo, to work and go to college. Recorded by Raul Seixas, the song “Capim Guiné” was a success throughout Brazil. From there, Aragon won the world.

After doing concerts and publicizing his works on radio and television throughout the country, the poet-singer stayed in a building in Praia do Jardim de Alah, in the neighborhood of Costa Azul, in Salvador, where he lives today.

The work “O Centro da Cidade Salvador” (The Center of Salvador City), written by Milton Santos, a classic of Geography, was presented to the University of Strasbourg, in 1958, as the professor’s doctoral thesis. In this work, Santos shows Geography as a science that, besides being spatial, is also temporal.

The book brings a rich association between the stories of Salvador and the events of the 1950s, in addition to explaining the multiple functions in a city in an accelerated process of transformation. The author analyzes the Bahian capital landscape from the interaction between the city site, the built environment and the social dynamics, and reveals the inequalities in the appropriation of the city space by different social classes.

The book became a landmark in the beginning of the geographic studies renewal, which started to incorporate social relations as inseparable components of the physical environment. Milton Santos also expands his analysis to the Recôncavo Baiano and the state of Bahia, as well as searches the national and world scales, describing the phenomena of urbanization and metropolization.

2 ● Bahia de Todos os Santos – Guia das Ruas e dos Mistérios da Cidade do Salvador, by Jorge Amado (1945)

“Bahia is waiting for you for its most ordinary party. Your eyes will be soaked in the picturesque, but they will also grieve with the misery that remains in these colonial streets where the modern skyscrapers begin to rise, thin and ugly.”

The above excerpt, from the book “Bahia de Todos os Santos – Guia das Ruas e dos Mistérios da Cidade do Salvador” (All Saints Bay – Guide to the Streets and Mysteries of Salvador City), invites the reader to get to know the capital of Bahia, understand the city’s beauties and contrasts and fall in love with the “city of Bahia”.

In the publication, Jorge Amado, one of those responsible for projecting beauties and mysteries of the Bahian people to the world, shows the reader a little about the streets, customs, secrets, personalities, gastronomy, religion, parties, beaches, among other aspects and places belonging to the city and people. With the author’s refinement and simplicity, “Bahia de Todos os Santos” is a road map of the “city of Bahia”, Salvador.

The guide has been updated several times, due to the city’s growth, but has not lost its essence. Despite the changes, the writer portrays in the book the spirit of the Bahian people that is still possible to perceive today. In “Bahia de Todos os Santos”, Jorge also highlights the music by his friend, also from Bahia, Dorival Caymmi: “Você já foi à Bahia, nêga? Não! Então vá…”.

3 ● Os Nomes das Ruas Contam Histórias, by Luiz Eduardo Dórea (1999)

The names of streets, avenues, alleys and hills are so important and carry so many meanings that they can rescue an important part of Salvador’s memory. This is the premise of the book “Os Nomes das Ruas Contam Histórias” (The names of the streets tell stories), written by journalist and researcher Luiz Eduardo Dórea.

The work, published in 1999, tells the story of Salvador through its streets. The author shows the meaning and origin of several streets in the city, revealing to the reader the charm and beauty that outline the trajectory of the country’s first capital.

After all, who has never wondered why Avenida Luís Viana Filho is called Paralela? And why is a small street near Largo Dois de Julho called Rua do Cabeça? These and other questions are answered in the book.

4 ● O samba na roda: samba e cultura popular em Salvador 1937-1954, by Alessandra Carvalho da Cruz (2006)

Alessandra Carvalho da Cruz reflects, in her master’s dissertation, on the importance of samba in the elaboration of the main national identity projects that were being produced in the context of the 1930s and 1950s in Salvador.

This is all shown through the pages of the Cultura Política magazine, at the national level, and in the specific context of the city, in the criticisms against “sambas and other monstrosities”, by Pinto de Carvalho and Pedro Calmon, and in the ethnographic production of Édison Carneiro.

From there, she also describes the historical importance of autonomous popular culture, which was expressed in the circles and songs of figures such as Batatinha and Riachão.

5 ● Um Grito de Liberdade – O processo de democratização do Esporte Clube Bahia, by Fernanda Varela (2015)

The book “Um Grito de Liberdade – O processo de democratização do Esporte Clube Bahia” (A cry for freedom – The democratization process of Esporte Clube Bahia), written by journalist Fernanda Varela, tells the story of the democratization process of the tricolor soccer team from the point of view of those who lived it.

The work includes interviews and testimonies from key characters to understand the moment the club went through, such as Carlos Ratis, Jorge Maia, Sidônio Palmeira, Fernando Schmid, former president Marcelo Guimarães Filho and others. Athletes who were in Bahia team at the time of the intervention, such as defender Titi and midfielder Fahel, were also heard.

The starting point of the book is the day when the fan Jorge Maia went to court against Bahia, requesting intervention, until the day when Fernando Schmidt was elected president of Bahia, in 2013.

6 ● O Largo da Palma, by Adonias Filho (1981)

The work “O Largo da Palma” (Palma Square) is composed of six novels by the Bahian writer Adonias Filho: A moça dos pãezinhos de queijo (The girl with the cheese rolls); O largo de branco (The white square); Um avô muito velho (A very old grandfather); Um corpo sem nome (A body without a name); Os enforcados (The hanged ones); and A pedra (The stone). Placing his plots around the square that gives the book its name, Adonias mixes the sacred and the profane, the urban and the rural, the erudite and the popular, bringing also non-fictional places, such as Igreja da Palma, Mercado Modelo, Jardim de Nazaré and other spatial references.

In the book, the writer focuses on the lower-middle class – characters that, although fictional, can be found in the place nowadays, including the elderly, beggars and immigrants.
Therefore, even with tales, “O Largo da Palma”, located in the quiet neighborhood of Mouraria, is portrayed almost reliably in the work. The writer also humanizes the place, such as the church that was “humble and wrinkled” and that witnessed everything that happened there; or else the “small, narrow streets try to hide themselves ashamed”.

7 ● A cidade de Salvador, dos idos de 1959: os olhares de Jorge Amado e Milton Santos, by Adriano Bittencourt Andrade (2004)

Two Bahians and two important works for Brazilian literature guide the thesis written by Adriano Bittencourt Andrade, which brings a historical-geographical analysis of Salvador between the 1950s and 1960s.

The author uses as a base the books published in the same year: “A Morte e a Morte de Quincas Berro D’água” (The Double Death of Quincas Water-Bray), by Jorge Amado, and “O Centro da Cidade de Salvador” (The Center of Salvador City), by Milton Santos, both from 1959. In his work, he explains that, despite being works of fiction, the books bring, in their core, information and “readings” of the city’s daily life that are rarely discussed in scientific books.

That is, in addition to showing links between the productions of the two Bahian writers, the author shows that the works enable the reader to better understand the conjuncture of that time, understanding the social and economic structure of Salvador before the dense transformations of the last decades of the 20th century.

8 ● Através da Bahia, by Von Spix and Von Martius (1938)

In 1817, zoologist Johann Baptist Spix, 36, and botanist Carl Friedrich Phillip Martius, 23, arrived in Brazil on a ride with Princess Maria Leopoldina, the future empress of Brazil, with the mission, given by the King of Bavaria, to collect as many samples of the fauna and flora of Brazil.

After 14 thousand kilometers traveled in Brazilian territory in three years of research, passing through Minas Gerais to the border with Goiás and Bahia, the Bavarians faced everything – drought, floods and all kinds of diseases – and returned to Europe with about 9 thousand species of plants and animals, including mammals, birds and amphibians, many of them from Salvador.

Spix died shortly after the trip, struck down by illnesses he faced on the journey. Martius, on the other hand, lived to be 74 years old. Until the end of his life, Martius dedicated himself to organizing and publishing what he discovered in Brazil.

In the book “Através da Bahia” (Through Bahia), the researchers show what they saw in the state, especially in Salvador, during the period they were here. They describe some movements that were important for national independence and report when the city of Salvador has ceased to be the center of the Government. However, it didn’t lose its importance as a commercial port of first order.

9 ● História do Brasil, by Afrânio Peixoto (1944)

Raised in the interior of Bahia, the doctor, politician, teacher, novelist and Brazilian historian Afrânio Peixoto (1876 – 1947) came still young to Salvador. In the capital of Bahia, he graduated in Medicine in 1897, at the School of Medicine of Bahia, founded in 1808. The city, then, was the scene of most of his books.

In the work “História do Brasil” (History of Brazil), Afrânio brings a historical panorama from the Mediterranean civilization to the Republic in Brazil. The book then tells in detail how the general government of Tomé de Sousa was, who arrived in All Saints Bay and founded the City of Salvador on March 28, 1549.

It is possible to notice, throughout the volume, several similarities and differences in comparison to the current Salvador, including the names of the neighborhoods, which used to be settlements, but which still exist today.

Link to read.

10 ● História do Brasil, by Frei Vicente do Salvador (1918)

The book “História do Brasil” (History of Brazil), written by Frei Vicente do Salvador (1564-c.1636-1639), has historical information about Salvador, which was the seat of the first Portuguese colony in America since the arrival of the Portuguese until the time it was governed by Diogo Luís de Oliveira. It also draws a panorama of the territory, with its flora and fauna, commenting on its climate and geography, in addition to showing characteristics and impressions about the natives, their way of speaking and customs.

The first chapters describe the arrival of Pedro Álvares Cabral’s fleet and narrate the first organization of colonization. In the volume, Frei Vicente also shows episodes of its first governors, the formation of administration in Salvador, explaining the system of general governments and hereditary captaincies; the entrances to sertão and the wars against the native people; military strengths and tactics; the Dutch invasion; among other historical events. He also writes – in a poetic and lyrical way – specifics of Salvador’s crops at the time.
In the work, Frei brings bold opinions, for example, in the well-known statement that the colonists should venture into the interior of Brazil, because “being great conquerors of land, they do not take advantage of them, but are content to scratch them along the sea like crabs”.

By Jorge Gauthier

Sister Dulce (1914 – 1992) was a woman of few words. But she knew, at the right time, how to touch hearts and get some help for those most in need. If Saint Dulce of the Poor were alive, she would turn 106 in May 2020. She used her fame and religious strength to attract “travelers” to Salvador. From the simplest pilgrims from Bahia hinterlands to the presidents, and even religious who today are saints, many wanted to see The Good Angel of Bahia up close.

When she was still called Maria Rita de Souza Brito Lopes Pontes, before becoming a nun, she left Salvador and went to be a novice in the city of São Cristóvão, in Sergipe. However, in 1933, after completing her novitiate, she asked to continue her missionary work in the capital of Bahia. She did so until the day she died, on March 13, 1992.

For over 60 years dedicated to charity, Dulce was an “ambassador” of the faith and also of the city. She managed to attract the attention – and the presence – of powerful politicians and religious to Salvador. Just to give you an idea, while she lived, Sister Dulce went through the management of 53 mayors of Salvador, 28 governors of Bahia and 26 presidents of the Republic. Right-wing, left-wing, center and military governments. To all of them, without exception, she asked for help. “My policy is to love your neighbor. I don’t get into politics, I don’t have time to find out about the party implications. My party is poverty”, she used to say to her visitors.

Today, 28 years after her death and with her recognition as a saint by the Catholic Church, Dulce continues to attract visitors to her sanctuary and memorial in Largo de Roma. At the Irmã Dulce Memorial (MID), in Largo de Roma, there is a permanent exhibition on the legacy of love and charity of The Good Angel of Bahia. It brings together more than 800 pieces that help to preserve and keep the ideals of the religious alive.

In 2019, MID received a total of 124,222 visitors; an increase of 120% in comparison with the flow registered in 2018 (55,757). Before the canonization announcement, the place registered an average of 250 visitors per day. In addition to foreign tourists, the survey registered in 2019 the presence of Brazilians from all states of the country, with a predominance (in this order) of visitors from Bahia, Sergipe, Ceará, Pernambuco, São Paulo and Minas Gerais.

Meet some illustrious visitors who met Dulce in Salvador:

John Paul II (1920-2005)

On July 7, 1980, about 500 thousand people were at the Administrative Center of Bahia (CAB) waiting for Pope John Paul II. The pontiff made his first visit to Brazil and insisted on putting Salvador on his itinerary. At the air base, he was received by politicians, authorities and Sister Dulce – who was already in fragile health. During the celebration of the Mass for the thousands of faithful, John Paul II was surprised by the crowd’s choir screaming fervently for the Bahian nun when she approached the altar where she received a special blessing.

At the time, John Paul II, who today has the title of Saint by the Catholic Church, told Dulce to take care of her health. It was precisely the advance of Dulce’s lung disease that brought the pope to Salvador for the second time. The meeting took place on October 20, 1991.

At the age of 77, the nun had been hospitalized for nine months at Hospital Santo Antônio, one of her works, which opened in 1983. The Pope arrived at Largo de Roma accompanied by an entourage. He entered Dulce’s room, said a prayer and stood for a few minutes holding her hand. The stop in Salvador hadn’t been included in the official schedule of the pontiff, who changed the schedule just to visit Dulce. She almost couldn’t speak anymore. John Paul II gave her a rosary.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997)

 <picture>

In 1979, Sister Dulce had her Social Works on the rise. However, the growth worried her. She feared that she would not be able to manage the growing demand for the hospital that emerged after the invasion of the chicken coop in her convent. That year, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, today Santa Teresa of Calcutta, visited Salvador. The Catholic nun, an ethnic Albanian, naturalized Indian, met the beds of the Abrigo Santo Antônio and also went with Dulce to the neighborhood of Alagados, where the Bahian nun did part of her social work.
The situation of Dulce’s works has always been complex from an economic point of view. At the time, Dulce even offered her management to Mother Teresa of Calcutta. However, the Catholic missionary, who developed a series of projects to assist charity around the world, including in Bahia, refused, as she said: “this is not my type of work”.

According to reports in the Irmã Dulce Memorial, the nun from Bahia said she understood that people were not interested in taking over the works, due to the constant financial difficulties, but she reinforced that “God solves these problems”.

Father Antônio Maria

Rio de Janeiro priest Antônio Maria, 74, considers himself an absolute “dulciano”. Several times, the priest was in Salvador to talk to the nun. At meetings – always musical – he used to sing for Dulce. In 2019, at the Vatican, he sang in honor of the nun at her canonization ceremony. “I had the happiness of meeting Sister Dulce up close, many times we were together, it was always edifying for me. Once, I made a song for her, I sang, she listened with great humility and, in the end, she said: ‘Father, you didn’t sing for Sister Dulce, no… you sang for Our Lady, because whenever one honors me, I transfer it to her'”, recalled the priest.

Antônio Maria liked to sing songs about Our Lady and Jesus Christ to Sister Dulce. It was also up to him to make the mortuary mask with plaster, registering the features of the Bahian nun, which serves as a basis for sculptures until today.

Paulo Coelho

When he did not even dream of being the famous writer of world renown, Paulo Coelho, 72, from Rio de Janeiro, ventured around the world and ended up in Salvador. He had the help of Dulce to return to Rio de Janeiro after a season in the capital of Bahia. The aid was registered for the first time in the book “O Mago”, a biography of Paulo Coelho written by journalist Fernando Morais. The book tells that, in 1967, Paulo Coelho’s parents put the son in a psychiatric hospital. He was 19 years old. “I was a rebel who did not obey anyone”, recalls the writer in the book.

After two months in the hospital, Coelho ran away and, hitchhiking, ended up in Salvador. He lived in the capital of Bahia with no money, no food and sleeping on the streets. It was there that he met Sister Dulce, who “helped him to get up”, as he reports in the book.

As Paulo said in “O Mago”, after receiving a bowl of soup at Irmã Dulce Social Works (Osid), he went to Dulce and asked her for money to buy two bus tickets to Rio de Janeiro. The Bahian nun wrote a note with the request, which he exchanged at the bus station window – which at the time worked in the Dois Leões neighborhood – for the two tickets, and finally headed home. The note said, with the Social Works stamp and signed by Dulce, on July 21, 1967: “These 2 boys ask for a free transport to Rio”.

This was the only time that Coelho and Dulce met. However, he remains grateful for the nun’s gesture and, to this day, continues to help her social works.

Antonio Carlos Magalhães (1927-2007)

Governor of Bahia in three terms, Antonio Carlos Magalhães (ACM) was one of the political figures to whom Dulce always appealed. In the period when ACM was Minister of Communications, Dulce starred in the Telebahia advertising campaign, a company of the Telebrás group, in Bahia, before the privatization in 1998.

Her photo was spread in all the old telephone booths in the state with a message asking for donations. At the time, Dulce obtained a lot of financial aid and became better known in the interior of the state. After the telephone campaign, and with ACM’s support, she carried out several media actions that benefited her works. Dulce often met with ACM to ask for help, going to his office with the famous black folder to ask for donations. The nun called him “godfather”. ACM donated to her part of the land where the Social Works (Osid) are installed.

On the day of Dulce’s death, ACM was governor and stressed that it would be the government’s mission to maintain the nun’s legacy. “We have to fight to maintain the spirit of Sister Dulce’s work. We lost our great saint and I lost a great friend, who always accompanied me in my public life and knew me very well. With Sister Dulce absent, it is the government’s obligation to redouble efforts. She was the one who achieved all this for Bahia, in this remarkable work throughout Brazil”, he declared in an article published in the newspaper Correio da Bahia, in the March 13, 1992 edition.

João Baptista Figueiredo (1918-1999)

 <picture>

The first president of the republic who visited Irmã Dulce was General João Baptista Figueiredo, through ACM. Figueiredo, from Rio de Janeiro, was the first head of state to enter the Irmã Dulce Social Works. On the visit, she took him on purpose to see the morgue – where some patients shared space with the dead. It worked. On the way out, he said: “Sister Dulce, if I need to rob a bank to help, I will rob”, to which she replied: “I will help you rob this bank”. After that, the president granted several benefits to Osid through donations.

Eurico Gaspar Dutra (1883-1974)

Sister Dulce had good strategies to help the neediest. In 1947, then President Eurico Gaspar Dutra, born in the state of Mato Grosso, was visiting Largo do Bonfim, in Salvador, when he came across Irmã Dulce accompanied by about 300 boys from Círculo Operário da Bahia (COB) – an entity founded by Dulce and workers for the poor people of the Lower City.

She placed herself in front of the president’s entourage. Gaspar Dutra ordered the car to stop to listen to the nun, who asked for more resources for the COB. He authorized federal aid for the Círculo Operário inauguration, and even participated in the inaugural ceremony.

José Sarney

The work of Irmã Dulce built in Salvador was taken to the world with more emphasis, for the first time, in 1988, when then president José Sarney, together with Queen Silvia of Sweden, suggested the name of the Bahian nun to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Dulce did not win the prize, but gained visibility, which became several donations.

That wasn’t Sarney’s only help to Dulce. As president, Sarney kept a secret phone number that only Sister Dulce had. It was known as “the red phone” that Dulce always used to call during the times of greatest need. For many times, the president, born in Maranhão, visited Bahia to speak with the nun.

Fernando Collor

In the 1990s, when then-president Fernando Collor de Mello introduced an economic plan and accounts were blocked, Dulce made an intervention. At the time, the nun talked by phone with the then Minister of Economy, Zélia Cardoso de Mello, and managed to have her account released.

Years before that, Collor de Mello, born in Rio de Janeiro, had already come to visit Irmã Dulce. He came to Salvador to talk to the nun.

Jorge Gauthier is a journalist and author of the book “Irmã Dulce: Os Milagres pela Fé”; research on the Bahian nun’s life since 2011.

A walk through Pelourinho, Santo Antônio Além do Carmo and Comércio

Experiencing the Center, exploring places and exchanging experiences is the proposal of the web series #VemProCentro, which will feature three episodes. The project is part of the #VemProCentro, a campaign to enhance the city’s Historic Center, designed to encourage residents and tourists to rediscover the region. You can check it out at @visitsalvadordabahia on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

Actress Thais Lago was invited to star in and command the stroll through the streets of Pelourinho, Santo Antônio Além do Carmo and Comércio, some of the city’s most famous neighborhoods. Its stories, architectures, art, cuisine and peculiarities will be unveiled throughout the three videos. Interestingly, Thais was born in Salvador, but has been living in São Paulo for a long time. It means that she is really rediscovering her own city, and knowing places she had never been to before. The immersion was real and exciting.

The #VemProCentro project aims to promote the occupation of the central region also on weekends, mainly attracting residents to a revitalized, livelier, colorful Historical Center and full of cultural activities. In the first episode, Thais Lago leads the tour around Pelourinho, the first neighborhood to be unveiled by the actress.

To foster this occupation of the central region also on weekends, Bahian actress Thais Lago went to the streets to unravel the secrets of the city. “I was surprised by a very different center from what I had in my memories. It was a real immersion”, says Thais.

“Pelourinho is full of history and many colors. There, wherever you go, the excitement is constant”, she reveals. “I had never had Coconut Maltado (ice cream shaken with iced milk and powdered milk). Boy, how did I never know this wonder?!”, the actress wonders.

The three episodes will be released on @visitsalvadordabahia on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, on December 4th (Pelourinho), 11th (Santo Antônio Além do Carmo) and 18th (Comércio). The #VemProCentro project is from Salvador City Hall. The web series was produced by the Secretariat of Culture and Tourism (SECULT) and the Usina Digital agency, in partnership with the Mandinga Filmes producer.

Santo Antônio Além do Carmo is a rarity! It has samba circle, art in the streets, many cultural spaces and residents in love with the neighborhood. Between conversations, the actress discovered people, places and flavors. Do you want to know more? Watch it all in the second episode of the #VemProCentro web series.

Rediscover Salvador through the eyes of a soteropolitan that hadn’t come here for a long time. With the web series, Thais Lago showed Salvador center charms and made us love the city even more. In this last episode, the actress walked around where it all started: Comércio neighborhood. Learn a little more about this neighborhood secrets.
